Why'd they grade that?
Youtube
Note: This post was last update in Oct 2022. We've been keeping an eye out for more knucklehead grading choices since and will compile them in a new post when the time is right.
As they say in the investing world, buy low, sell for less! Some would call these investors "Knuckleheads", but we disagree. These are savvy, competent, and intelligent Knuckleheads. It takes skill, research, and pure dedication to submit a bathroom reader for grading and pay 20 times what its worth in grading fees!
Own a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 or Detective 27 and thinking of getting it graded? We only have one thing to say, those comics are TRASH! When we grade a comic, we skip right past the display cabinet at the local comic shop and head straight for the dollar bins. Then we open our hip sack wallets and get ready to make it rain those sweet, sweet grading fees.
This article features the most common, unremarkable and forgettable graded comics to ever sell at auction. These are low grade, non-key, dollar bin graded collectibles. These are the kinds of comics that make you ask:
"Why’d they grade that??!!"

Xenya #2
Note: 9" crack on right side edge. While the record breaking sale price of $4 is likely due to a crack in the case, this graded turd wouldn't fetch much more even if it was encapsulated in actual 'crack'! |

What the heck is a "Gammarauders"? Oh right, it's a $6 graded turd. |

If you thought the last guy was a Grading Turd God, meet the grader of "V" - the comic title so popular that it only needs one letter. What does "V" stand for? Vomit? Vulgar? Vile? We don't know... or care! What we do know is that this TV Series Companion Comic based on the television show of the same name should get thrown into the Void! |

Superboy #116 (Restored)
Ok, no one wants to say they are a fan of Super Boy, but there is a small and dedicated following for the little brat. However, #116 is noted for being a particularily yawn inducing. Add a super low grade from CGC with the ever so popular purple Restored label, and we have ourselves nice entry to the list. Restoration includes: small amount of color touch on cover. (Pieces on cover re-attached with tape. Tape on interior cover & centerfold.) |

Forgotten Realms #18
Forgotten Realms, indeed. I don't think anyone remembers this comic. So why did the grader send it in to CGC? Well, they probably forgot it was in their submission because no collector would ever think about grading this forgotten turd. |

Challengers of the Unknown #13 (Restored)
Ok ok, usually we give anything from the silver age a break. This comic was released in 1958 making it an early silver ager at that. But we just can't ignore this stinker that was graded at 1.0 with that colourfull purple lable that all collectors seek. Restoration includes: small amount of color touch on cover. 1/3 of page 15 missing, affects story. INCOMPLETE. |

![]() GRADED TURD AWARD WINNER!
Good Luck #1
Another Graded Turd Award recipient - the award given to perfectly graded comics that sell for less than the grading fees. Why? Because a perfect turd is still just a turd! And Good Luck #1 is definitely a turd! Let's take a look at the comic description: "What if Luck was quantifiable, and something everyone was born with? Everyone, except the Unfortunates – teenagers born with absolutely zero Luck". The "Unfortunates" is a very fitting way to describe anyone that was "lucky" enough to buy this award winning turd. |

Caliber Presents #2
There's always been a demand for classic "skull" covers, just look at any pre-code horror like this, this, or this. Unfortunately, these swastika toting skulls with the smoking cyberpunk character doesn't have the same effect. The story summary is "A 200 year old vampire trapped inside the body a of a 12 year old boy makes a pact with the mysterious shopkeeper". This graded turd sold for just over cover prince. Welp, I'm sold! Put this on our want list! |

X-Force #12 CGC 8.0
We applaud the seller of this auction who graded a beautifully average copy of a mass produced clunker. Note the frazzled cover art typical of 1990s comics. This would make a great addition to your art collection right up there next to your Jackson Pollock and that whopper your aunt suzie left at the last Burger King cosplay party. And talk about your non-key, this copy boasts the first appearance of Cruel. Who's cruel you ask? We dont know either but I'll tell you who its not, the grader of this fine gem that sold at auction for $11 |

Justice League America #88
The DC Wiki article for this comic says it all: "Justice League America #88 is an issue of the series Justice League America." It continues: "This web page is missing a well-written and detailed synopsis" You could have fooled us! Furthermore, this comic is the highest graded copy on the census! This is why it can fetch such a lucritave amount at auction - $6 |

Fantastic Four - Australian Edition
Our very first entry hails from the land down under, and it digeri-does have lots going for it. This is the ONLY copy on the CGC census. And of course, this means this is an extremely rare comic with historical and cultural significance, right? It has noting to do with this comic being a dollar bin reject that no one from the north pole to the land down under would ever send in for grading. |
